1. Who can participate?

Any patient or family of a patient associated with WVU or any WVU medical provider: nurse, resident, fellow, medical student, faculty, technician, chaplain, or clinical associate are all welcome to participate. If you are not sure if you are eligible, email WVUSynapses@gmail.com.

2. What types of submissions are allowed?

Anything! Any creative work is permitted including but not limited to poetry, short story, essay, musical composition, painting, sketching, water color, wood working, knitting, crocheting, food recipes, graphic novels, photography, playwriting, jewelry making, pottery, and more!

3. Is there a theme?

There is no particular theme. We encourage pieces that have been inspired by the interaction between the patient and provider and anticipate the bulk of the submissions will therefore focus on medical themes, but there are no limitations.

4. When are submissions due?

Submissions are on a rolling basis. Our plan is to publish an annual magazine each Spring. Due to COVID, there have been some delays with the publication process and our Spring 2020 magazine will be virtually published in October 2020. Typically to be included in the Spring publication we ask that submissions are sent by February 1 of the same year.

5. I have 3D art that I would like to submit. How do I go about doing this?

You have two options. You can either take a picture of the art and submit that picture or you are welcome to email WVUSynapses@gmail.com to set up a time to drop off the art at the Health Science Center (HSC) behind WVU Hospital.

6. When will the magazine be distributed?

Due to COVID, in-person gatherings to celebrate the launch of the magazine have been temporarily suspended. The first edition of the magazine will be published online at the end of October 2020. When it is safe from a COVID standpoint, we will host a "launch day" to celebrate the printed version of the magazine.

7. I am interested in participating in the research portion of this project. How can I get involved?

The research portion of this project involves three brief surveys to see if your participation has influenced things such as mood, interest in work, understanding of diagnosis, etc. The surveys are available to both patients and medical providers. Please email WVUSynapses@gmail.com if you are interested.

8. Do you have any flyers that I can distribute to people interested in participating?
